India’s Scramjet-ISRO- Satish Dhawan space centre-s.sonic speed Mech 6

Now Elite club will include India also. It launched a rocket using scramjet engine. Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) developed  the Scramjet . This is one of the biggest aches Two scramjet engines was installed in an ATV (advance technology vehicle). The two engines took off from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota.

Air breathing propulsion system :

It was a big step towards developing air-breathing propulsion system by ISRO. A scramjet engine uses oxygen present in the atmosphere to burn the hydrogen fuel. Atmospheric oxygen burns the fuel at the first stage. This decreases the amount of oxygen nd thus the weight of the jet.

Advantages:

Fuel accounts for 85% of the weight of a rocket. Oxygen accounts for 60% of the weight of the fuel. To attain escape velocity in the first stage, half of the fuel is used.   As there is no need to carry oxygen in a scramjet engine for the first stage, a weight of rocket will decrease. Its payload capacity will increase considerably. Rockets with scramjet have several times greater thrust compared with rockets powered by cryogenic fuel and liquid fuel.

Sunday test flight’s ignition and combustion achieved a supersonic speed of Mach 6 for about six seconds. supersonic speed Mach 6 is six times the speed of sound. This is a big technological achievement. It depends on atmospheric oxygen for combustion, its trajectories are vastly different from other conventional rockets. It will remain in the atmosphere for a longer time to attain the required speed.

Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle:

It will take many years to build a commercial rocket powered by scramjet engines. There are many limitations to overcome. Once it’s done, it can power BRAHMOS missile. BRAHMOS missile is one of the fastest cruise missile (Mach 3). By installing a scramjet engine it will attain a speed of more than Mach 6. It will give it an edge over missiles of other countries. It will be capable of striking the enemy very fast without giving them anytime for reaction. India uses PSLV (Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle) to deliver satellites into the orbit. Replacing it by scramjet will increase the payload strength of the rocket.
